We are going to jump right in after our break from school in March and begin a unit on striking objects by using hockey sticks. We will learning several hockey skills over the next two weeks including safety in the sport of hockey and using the equipment correctly. We will learn to dribble, pass, receive the puck and tackle the puck away from someone else. We will play a variety of lead-up games using the hockey sticks over the next two weeks.
This week we got to move inside and continue with our hockey unit. We continued to working on dribbling skills, passing and receiving as well as a drive shot and a wrist shot. We played several lead-up games and had some really fun warm-up activities such as Chicken Dance Tag, Mission (In) Possible, and Uno Warm-up . We spent the last two days of the week playing a combination of Sideline/3 Rotation Hockey. It was great to see how much the students had learned in just a few short days.
This week we find ourselves back outside but, that is not stopping us! We are moving into a volleying unit, where student are learning some simple volleyball skills. We are starting with the overhead volley and the bump. Third grade will move into spending a little time on learning to do the underhand serve. Next week I hope to move these stills into the gym with the nets out to incorporate some age appropriate lead-up games.
This week we are excited to move into the gym and start using the volleyball nets. 2nd grade will continue to do activities using the volley and bump skills. 3rd grade will add the skill of serving to their repertoire. 2nd grade will be doing the ABC bump/volley relay as well as playing Air Raid and Victory Volleyball this week. 3rd grade will playing Points Galore, as well as doing a 6 station circuit working on skill building.
