2nd Grade Nutrition
The food we eat can be divided into what are called food groups. (vegetables, grains, milk, meat & beans, fruits)
Food is fuel to our bodies as gas is fuel to cars.
Your body needs a variety of foods that supply us with the necessary nutrients to be healthy.
Fruits-are high in potassium, high in fiber and Vit C. Vit C helps in healing cuts and wounds and keeping teeth and gums healthy. Fruits are low in sodium, fat and calories. They help with avoiding heart diseases, some cancers, obesity, type2 diabetes, lower blood pressure and bowel function.
Vegetables-like fruits offer all the same benefits but, Vit A as well. Vit A keeps eyes and skin health and helps protect against infections.
Grains (are divided into whole grains and refined grains) Whole grains off Vit B and are high in fiber. Whole grains also offer the same benefits of fruits and vegetables.
Dairy-high in calcium for strong bones.
Protein foods-provide Vit E, protein, Vit B, iron, magnesium, these help the body release energy to give you energy. Portein plays a role in the function of the nervous system and aid in formation of red blood cells and building tissues and strong muscles. Iron is used to carry oxygen to the blood.
While you should eat several meals each day to fuel your body you need not be limited to what types of food you eat and when. Eggs and OJ aren't just for breakfast! Try eating breakfast at dinner time. Try eating vegetable raw with dips low in oils and fats, make your own Popsicle with fruit juices to avoid the sugars.
Cause and effect of foods we eat-foods with lots of sugar causes cavities, weight issues and lack of energy, sleepiness, high blood sugar, trouble concentrating. Sugar has no nutritional value.

3rd Grade Nutrition- In addition to the above information 3rd graders will learn:
Nutrients are -protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water, fat
1. Protein: fish, chicken, beef, lentils, legumes, soy curd, tofu (MUSCLES)
2. Carbohydrates: breads, bagels, rice pilaf, pasta, crackers, tortillas, potato (BODY
ENERGY)
3. Vitamins, various fruits and vegetables, green beans (SKIN)
4. Minerals: low-fat milk, cheese, yogurt, broccoli, green leafy vegetables (BONES)
5. Water: pure water, not juice, tea or soda (DIGESTIVE SYSTEM)
6. Fat: butter, oils, lards, milk, meat, fish
Foods can contain more than one nutrient but, are classified by their most common nutrient. Spaghetti has carbohydrates and protein thus it is considered a carbohydrate.
Calories is tool used to measure the amount of energy in a food. Some foods have lots of calories and give us lots of energy. However when calories are not used for energy they are stored as fat. Active people burn a lot of calories. Food need to have a balance between calories and nutrients.
Cause and effects of foods with lots of sugar, cavities, weight issues and lack of energy, sleepiness, high blood sugar, trouble concentrating. Sugar has no nutritional value.
Changes in our habits are easier if we do one habit at a time.
1. Don’t skip meals
2. Choose good-for-you snacks
3. Exercise regularly
4. Use portion control (fist size=1 cup, thumb size=1 oz, palm=5 oz.)
5. Wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
6. Wash your hands before handling food and eating
7. Stay away from alcohol, caffeine and other drugs
Type 2 Diabetes is preventable with proper nutrition and exercise. Food that causes the body to have too much sugar such as starchy foods like potatoes, corn and bread will turn to sugar by the time they are digested. Diabetes is a condition that makes it hard for the body to get rid of extra sugar. Maintaining a healthy weight by eating healthy foods and exercising is a strategy for preventing diabetes.
Food labels carry valuable information:
1. Ingredients listed
2. Nutritional facts
3. Special Handling warnings
Main ingredients are listed first. If an ingredient ends with the OSE it is a form of sugar. (fructose, lactose, sucrose, dextrose)
Don't be fooled by substitute words. Others words for fat is lard, shortening, oil. Another word for salt is sodium.
Look for nutritional facts on labels.
