Sept 5-7.....
This week was a time to welcome returning students back to Chapman Hill, as well as welcome new faces to Chapman Hill. For all students in Rediger, Dizney, Heller and Foelkl it was a time to met their new PE teacher for the 2012-13 school year.
We started each class time with a warm-up using large motor skills moments such as running, walking, skipping and galloping then went into stretching. Stretches for this next two weeks were Jumping Jacks, Mountain Climbers, Line Jumps and the Butterfly Stretch. We played Critter Tag, Poison Hoops, Four Square, Toe to Toe, and other grouping games. We talked about our classroom rules and procedures, as well as introduced the classroom management system I will be using this year. We went over the grading system and my expectations in class and the possible consequences for not following those expectations. You can find all this information under the tab Making it all Work.
Sept 10-12...
This week the Cupid Shuffle was introduced to students as a way to move to both the beat of the music and the directions of the music. The simple four pattern song was a great way to incorporate rhythmic movement into our PE class, as well learn to move to the beat and follow directions. Incorporating music and movement is a great workout as well. By the end of the month I will not be surprised if each student will be able to perform this movement individually without the music.
Our games for the week were the Healthy Life Style Game, In and Out Fitness, Pin Down, Fire and Ice, Fastest Tagger in the West, and the Bean Bag Grab Game. Throughout these games the stretches student independently preformed were the stretches we learned last week as a whole group. Students were accountable for their own stretching this week as they rotated out of the games.
Sept 18-22...
This week gave us our first opportunity to run the track on the mesa in preparation for the jog-a-thon, Oct 3rd. We also tackled learning some of the well known recess games in the smaller more friendly environment of our PE class. It was my goal to teach four games this week. One game per day, but as I watched the progress of our students it was decided that it was better to learn two games well, rather then four games poorly. We focused on Four Square and Wall Ball (using the hands). New stretches for this week were, Shoulder Shrugs, Ankle Rotations, Washing Machine, Fire Crackers, and Windmills.
Sept 24-28....
This week we for two days we returned to the Cupid Shuffle for our warm-up activity. The other two days were lap running indoors for preparation for the jog-a-thon. We are also introducing playground balls and the many skills that can be acquired with this old time favorite. Students will be given challenges at a basic level and offered increasingly harder challenges throughout the week. This week again will allow student to stretch themselves individually with the warm-up stretches taught last week. Student will be playing such games as Balls to the Walls and others. With the assembly scheduled for Friday 9-28 this will affect both Heller and Foelkl's PE class time.
